Day 5 Sport 5: Padel
Padel
Today I felt that I’d try another sport that I hadn’t tried much for the final session of the sideline scoop where I try 5 different sports in 5 days. That sport was Padel. This is a sport that i have wanted to try as i had seen other people play and looked like it would be good fun. I managed to book a court at Golf it in Hogganfield, seemingly one of the few locations offering this service.
I took time at the start of this session to ensure that I properly understood the rules as although it may loom very similar to tennis the use of walls and cages can complicate the rules of the game.
Warm-Up:
As this sport is very similar to tennis i decided to bring my warmup that i had learnt was effective from tennis to Padel. After a few minutes of light jogging around the court, I transitioned into dynamic stretches. Arm circles, leg swings, and torso twists helped loosen up my muscles and improve my range of motion. To really get my heart rate up, I once again included some lateral shuffles and quick footwork drills as I felt these to be very effective yesterday at tennis. This not only warmed me up physically but also mentally prepared me for the challenges of the game.Main session:
Once warmed up, it was time to dive into some focused practice. I partnered up with my friend to work on our smashes, a crucial skill in Padel and also probably the most enjoyable. We set up at opposite ends of the court, taking turns feeding each other balls. My friend tossed the ball high, and I would smash the ball aiming to bounce the ball once on my opponents side of the court, then off the wall and back to my side. If i could master this skill this would make it impossible for any opponents to return the ball from this therefore guaranteeing me an easy point when it came to an in game scenario. After several rounds, we switched roles, allowing my partner to practice their smashes while I provided consistent feeds. This drill not only honed our technique but also built confidence in our ability to dominate at the net.
Next up was practicing reading balls bounces off the wall. We positioned ourselves near one side of the court and took turns hitting against the wall. This drill was essential for improving our reaction times and adaptability during matches. As the ball rebounded unpredictably, we focused on footwork and positioning, ensuring we were ready to respond effectively.
With practice behind us, it was time for a friendly match. We had 2 more of our friends join us to make it 2 vs 2 as this was recommended to us to be the best way to play the sport. We played lighthearted games swapping partners after every set until ours 2 hours booking was almost done.
Cool Down: Reflecting on the Session
As our match concluded, we took a moment to cool down. Stretching out our muscles helped prevent soreness later on. I reflected on my performance—what worked well and what needed improvement—while enjoying a refreshing drink. That will conclude day 5 and the 5th and final sport of the Sideline Scoop blog, thank you to everyone who has come on this journey with me, i have thoroughly enjoyed the process of not only trying some different sports but blogging my journey of some of the sports that I love and do on a day to day basis.
